The engraved cipher on the lid, surrounded by exhuberant leafy scrolls and two birds, is for Robert and Maria (Van Huysen) Harris, who were married in the Dutch Church in New York in 1695. Maria Harris married her second husband, John Gorne, on April 1, 1701. The initials of the second couple are inscribed on the handle. The armorial engraving on the front, amidst lush feather mantling, is unidentified.

engraved on body: lion passant withing foliate surround. [arms- as yet unidentified]

Marking: marked on body to left of handle and on rim of cover: S / I V (in trefoil)
Maria (Van Huysen) and Robert Harris; Maria (Van Huysen Harris) and John Gorne; their daughter Maria Gorne (?1706-?1787) who married Samuel Ten Eyck (1704-1792); their son Thomas Ten Eyck (1742-1808) who married Susannah Barr Stewart (b. 1757); their daughter Maria Susannah Ten Eyck (1789-1850) who married Col. John Pine Decatur (1786-1832); their daughter Anna Pine Decatur (1812-1896) who married William H. Parsons (1813-1867); their son William Decatur Parsons (b. 1855); sold to Francis P. (1875-1937) and Mabel Brady Garvan (b. 1886), 1922; gift to the Gallery of Fine Arts, Yale University, 1930; sold to The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1938.
