In 1863 Degas’s sister Thérèse married her Neapolitan first cousin Edmondo Morbilli at the church of the Madeleine in Paris. Degas painted this double portrait several years later. Of chronically poor health, Thérèse loved children but had a marriage without them, and Edmondo’s modest fortune led them to a quiet life in Italy. The couple is shown here after Thérèse experienced a miscarriage. Literally sitting in the shadow of her husband, who looms larger in front of her, a seemingly worried and fragile wife rests her hand on his shoulder.
