There are now over 400 Italian paintings in the Metropolitan Museum, 150 of them acquired in the more than thirty years since the Museum first published a catalogue of its Italian works. The first volume of a greatly enlarged and extensively revised catalogue, the Florentine School, was published in 1971. The second volume, on the Venetian School, appeared in 1973. A third volume, devoted to the Sienese and Central Italian Schools, was issued in 1980. The present volume, on the schools of North Italy, concludes the series.

The paintings are arranged alphabetically by artist and, within the artist, in order of accession number. For each artist a brief biography is supplied, and every painting is illustrated, some with details.

The author is an internationally known authority in the field of Italian paintings. His collaborator was Curator of European Paintings in the Museum.
