Costume Design: From Design to Drape

Join renowned costume designer Karen Young for this three-part workshop (May 3, 10, and 17) and explore the foundations of costume creation. Visit the exhibition Charles James: Beyond Fashion to gather inspiration from innovative techniques used by this twentieth-century couturier and put your ideas into action as Young guides you in draping, darting, fitting, and creating movement with cloth. Learn to transform sketches into reality, shape forms, and explore character creation through costume.

This workshop meets in the Met's galleries and studios. Participants must be 18 or older. All levels welcome. Space is limited. Purchase tickets below or at the Great Hall box office. Instructor: Karen Young

Karen Young has designed costumes for numerous modern dance and contemporary video art projects, which have been seen in theaters and museums all over the world. Her design work for dance can be seen in the repertoires of Elisa Monte, Karole Armitage, Larry Keigwin, Pascal Rioult, Philadanco, Noémie Lafrance, Fang-Yi Sheu's LAFA & Artists (Taiwan), and the Martha Graham Dance Company, with which she has been associated for many years and where she recently reconstructed Martha Graham's original costume designs for Clytemnestra.
