Wang Dongling Chinese

Not on view

Evolving from the artist’s earlier practice of traditional calligraphic styles and use of the hanging scroll format, this work explores the abstract, expressive potential of brush, ink, and paper without reference to any recognizable character form. Large areas of the composition are saturated with rich, black ink that has been allowed to seep outward, creating uneven edges. Several bold brushstrokes intersect these areas, and what little white space is left has been spattered with ink dots. By reversing the usual figure-ground relationship of ink and paper, Wang has infused this work with great dynamic tension.
