Disorienting perspectives and darkroom experimentation followed the physical and emotional devastation of World War I. In this work, by means of reverse printing (which makes the photograph read as a negative) and an overhead viewpoint, Roh transformed the huddled bather into an ambiguous figure—perhaps prisoner, perhaps daredevil, perhaps both.
