This unfinished painting may have been a preliminary sketch for an unrealized composition of a dance scene that would have included La Carmencita (1868–1910). Sargent likely found it difficult to capture Carmencita’s energetic dancing style and abandoned the idea. The precise rendering of her hand position and her studied profile contrast with the impressionistically rendered swaying fringe of her shawl. One critic, denounced her "torsal shivers and upheavals" as risqué. A video of Carmencita dancing, shown on the monitor nearby, hardly seems provocative today.
