By the early 1980s Miyashita Zenji had developed his signature style, which involved applying thin layers of tinted clay in gradations of hue. His mature work was a modern embodiment of a classic Kyoto style associated with the multilayered court robes or decorated papers made for inscribing poetry during the Heian period (794–1185). He applied fine layers of color using the clay itself, dyed with mineral pigments.
