This towering ceramic sculpture is from the artist’s latest series, Upright (Kitsu), which he started producing in 2012. A special characteristic of Fukami’s work is the distinctive combination of the classic clear blue-white glaze (Japanese: seihakuji; Chinese: qingbai,) and innovative, modern technology. Since 1980, Fukami had been using a unique high-pressure slip-casting technique to avoid warping. The porcelain slip is cast into a plaster mold using pressurized air to ensure that the clay throughout the piece is even. The distinctive glaze recalls luminescent glazes of Song dynasty celadon wares produced in the Jingdezhen kilns in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The reflective qualities of the sleek, smooth surfaces of his works are part of the aesthetic, which relies on the interplay of light and shadow on his works.
