Vasanti Ragini, Page from a Ragamala Series (Garland of Musical Modes)

India (Himachal Pradesh, Bilaspur)

Not on view

Vasant means “spring,” and here, two women stand in a burgeoning springtime landscape, filling baskets with flowers. The style of the picture and its vertical format are close to those seen in works from early eighteenth-century Bilaspur. The manuscript to which this page belonged was once in the royal collection of Mandi, likely reflecting the mobility of artists between courts, as witnessed elsewhere in both Rajasthan and at the hill courts of Himachal Pradesh.
