Armenian Gospel with Silver Cover

Not on view

These seventeenth-century repoussé book covers, made for a thirteenth-century Gospel Book, are typical of Kayseri metalwork. The front plaque depicts the Nativity with the Adoration of the Shepherds surrounded by a jeweled grapevine border with a green enamel background. The back cover uses the same border around an image of the Resurrection, directly inspired by Christoffel van Sichem’s woodcut printed in the Armenian Oskan Bible. The inscription identifies the maker as Astuatsatur Shahamir.
