An Ethiopian Chief

F. Holland Day American

Not on view

The 1896 defeat of the Italians by Abyssinian Emperor Menelek II at Adowa in northern Ethiopia provided Day with the inspiration for a series of heroic figure studies entitled Menelek, Nubia, and variations of An Ethiopian. The exotically costumed and appointed model for these pictures was J. Alexandre Skeete, a strikingly handsome artist’s model and aspiring artist.
