“Junk Nutrients is basically a work that came of another work that I cut up because it wasn’t right at the time. It was originally a long, convoluting intestine piece that didn’t get far. I wanted to make a work that I could stuff with trash I’d been collecting from Beng Kok (Reed Lake), near Phnom Penh, where my old studio was. I had just begun using burlap around this time. There was a lot of politics on the radio. It may have been election time or something. So things like propaganda, pollution of the mind, pollution in the body (from cheap food, full of chemicals), the numbing effect of tradition and culture, etc., etc., started hovering around in my head.”
