(color), date it to 1842 and call it "Vue de l'île d'Ischia"; note that Rémond was very familiar with the island of Ischia, having already visited it in 1822, when he undertook another trip to Italy in 1842; state that there is a drawing of the identical seascape by Rémond in the collection of the École des beaux-arts, Paris, in an ensemble of drawings from his 1842 trip made in preparation for six panels he painted for the Museum of Natural History's gallery of mineralogy; state that the corresponding drawing is similarly annotated "à bord de la Marie-Christine, 31 juillet 1842" and that the "Marie Christine" was a ship on which Rémond circled the island in order to complete studies of Mount Vesuvius for his decorative panels; discuss the site.

Esther Bell. "Catalogue Raisonné of the Thaw Collection." Studying Nature: Oil Sketches from the Thaw Collection. Ed. Jennifer Tonkovich. New York, 2011, p. 140, no. 115, ill. (color), calls it "View of Ischia from the Sea" and dates it 1842.

There is a related drawing in the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Art, Paris, one of sixty-six under inventory no. PC 7740 (Rec.); pencil on paper, 15 x 24.5 cm. The sheet is inscribed and dated (lower left): à bord la Maria Cristina / Ischia 31 juillet 1842 (on board the Maria Cristina / Ischia 31 July 1842). The drawing depicts four rowboats in approximately the same positions as they appear in the painting, but not the Maria Cristina, which is presumably the steam- and sailboat included in the painting.
