Dragon in the Clouds Flower Basket (Hanakago)

Iizuka Shōkansai Japanese

Not on view

This large-scale, globular flower basket from 1990 represents a signature Iizuka family technique (tsubushi). The artist removes the oil from the timber bamboo, splits it in half, and then flattens it by pounding to render it more pliable. The straight pieces can then be manipulated into graceful curves. The technique highlights the natural beauty of the bamboo and makes visible reference to its famed resilience.
