Three Press Previews at Metropolitan Museum

The Mourners: Medieval Tomb Sculptures from the Court of Burgundy
(opening Tuesday, March 2) – an unprecedented loan from the Musée des Beaux Arts in Dijon of 38 dramatic alabaster statuettes, considered among the most sumptuous and innovative of the late Middle Ages.

• Remarks at 11: 00 a.m. Speakers to include Metropolitan Museum Director Thomas P. Campbell and the Mayor of the City of Dijon, France.

The Art of Illumination: The Limbourg Brothers and the Belles Heures of Jean de France, Duc de Berry (opening Tuesday, March 2) – a never-to-be-repeated opportunity to view all of the illuminated pages from one of the most lavishly illustrated manuscripts surviving from the late Middle Ages, a treasure of The Cloisters.

• Curatorial tours at 10:30 and 11:40 a.m.

• Photo opportunity at 11:30 a.m. with 30 costumed citizens of Nijmegen, The Netherlands, birthplace of the Limbourg Brothers, in attire based on medieval illuminations

André Mertens Galleries for Musical Instruments (opening March 2) – refreshed-and-reinstalled gallery for Western musical instruments reopens after an eight-month hiatus.

• Musical demonstrations will be held at 11:30 and 11:45 a.m. on two remarkable instruments from the Met's collection—a renowned Stradivari violin and the famous Cristofori piano, the oldest extant grand piano in the world
