"Bahram Gur Hunting with Azada", Folio from a Shahnama (Book of Kings)

Author Abu'l Qasim Firdausi Iranian

Not on view

The Shahnama manuscript from which this folio comes includes a page dated to the year 1352, making it the last known Injuid-period (1325–53) manuscript. The style of the painting in this manuscript is similar to that of an Injuid Shahnama dated 1341. This folio illustrates the hero Bahram Gur hunting with his companion and harp-player Azada. In the Shahnama version of this tale, Azada is trampled under the feet of Bahram Gur’s camel for her impudence, as depicted here.
