Most of Giovanni David's etchings were published by his Genoese patron in Venice, and are infused with the sophistication and theatricality that characterized the city's culture in the eighteenth century. His series of Divers Portraits, inscribed with French poems on society's customs and morals, was addressed to a continental audience and very likely inspired Goya's suite of satiric etchings, Los Caprichos, with their content, composition, and innovative use of aquatint.
