Head of a Man Wearing a Cap or Helmet, possibly 2nd–3rd century
Probably Great Britain and Ireland (Celtic)
Fossiliferous limestone; H. 9 in. (24.1 cm)
Gift of Torkom Demirjian, in honor of Mary and Michael Jaharis, 2000 (2000.525.1)

The facial features are like those on numerous Celtic heads found in Yorkshire. Many, however, are actually products of later periods, continuing the simplicity of forms characteristic of Celtic sculpture. Stone heads like this one may have functioned as surrogates for actual human heads, thus retaining a certain aura of power. The military appearance of the headgear may indicate the man's status and significance.
