Kitchen Scene, 1620s
Peter Wtewael (Dutch, 1596–1660)
Oil on canvas; 44 3/4 x 63 in. (113.7 x 160 cm)
Rogers Fund, 1906 (06.288)

Peter Wtewael was the comparatively obscure son of the Utrecht Mannerist Joachim Wtewael (1566–1638), whose rare kitchen scenes were the model for this lascivious picture of the 1620s. A pretty young cook responds to a strapping farmhand's offer of whatever she desires by jamming a chicken onto a spit.
