The pose used in this picture of 1818 was repeated in a larger, slightly later portrait of Dedreux and his sister Elizabeth (private collection, France). Alfred Dedreux became well known as a painter of racing and hunting scenes. He was the son of the architect Pierre-Anne Dedreux (1788–1849) and the nephew of Pierre-Joseph Dedreux-Dorcy (1789–1874), both friends of Gericault. The painting was once owned by the painter Eugène Delacroix.
