O’Hara is largely associated with performance and music; her drawings and screenprints reflect various kinds of movement, energy, sounds, and sensations. For Il Gallo in Michoacán, Mexico, she worked from a drawing made over thirty minutes, during which time she observed a rooster's movements as he hunted for bugs. The flat silhouette recalls both the jerky motion of the rooster as well as the silhouette of his feathered form. O’Hara first created a mural painting based on the drawing, before developing this print.
