Chiaroscuro drawings first appeared in Germany before the middle of the fifteenth century, and gained increasing popularity into the sixteenth century. This example has been variously given to Albrecht Altdorfer, to his school, to the circle of Baldung, or to the young Lucas Cranach (1472-1553). The style of draftsmanship recalls drawings from the region of the Upper Rhine, especially Switzerland. A comparison with the work of Albrecht Altdorfer (ca. 1480-1538) has led to the suggestion that the unknown draftsman worked after an original by Altdorfer from about 1513-15.
