Cap crown

Italian, Venice or Flemish, Brussels

Not on view

Making extensive use of decorative zigzags and other geometric designs, this type of extremely fine needle lace, which was made during the first half of the eighteenth century, is rare and highly prized. The seemingly endless array of effects is achieved by using one basic buttonhole stitch but varying the grouping and spacing of the stitches.
