Franz Sitte

T. Lux Feininger American, born Germany
ca. 1928

Feininger (son of the painter Lyonel Feininger) was one of the youngest students to attend the Bauhaus. Although he considered himself a painter primarily, during his years at the school (1926-31) he was never without his camera, photographing his classmates, the school buildings, Oskar Schlemmer's stage productions, and the Bauhaus Jazz Band from dramatically angled viewpoints or as extreme close-ups, an energetic style perfectly in tune with the climate of visual and technical experimentation that prevailed at the school. For this unusual portrait Feininger photographed fellow student Franz Sitte through a window and in doing so recorded his own image as a reflection on the glass.
