Jardinière and pedestal

Charles Wingender and Brother American

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 706

Charles and William Wingender produced stoneware in Germany before emigrating and establishing their American manufactory in 1881. This jardinière’s relief ornamentation with cobalt blue glaze recalls traditional seventeenth-century German stoneware, which experienced a revival in copies made in both Germany and the United States in the late nineteenth century.
