Alpine Mastiffs Reanimating a Traveller

After Sir Edwin Henry Landseer British
Engraved and published by John George Landseer British
Partly engraved by Thomas Landseer British

Not on view

Two large dogs discover a man lying in the snow. One licks the unconscious traveller's hand to revive him while the other barks to summon monks who approach at right, their monastery seen in the distance. The print is based on a picture that Landseer exhibited at the British Institution in 1820 when he was just eighteen years old.
