Robes Modèles Historiques: Country Woman

19th century
Not on view
Drawing, part of album with 60 19th-century costume plates and 1 drawing of mostly women's historical costumes, featuring a variety of designs for traditional costumes from different parts of the world, as well as costumes for literary characters, including Esmeralda. This drawing consists of a country woman's dress, made with a light brown fabric with semi-abstract floral motifs executed with shades of purple and green, over a white chemise and a brown petticoat with thin, vertical, white stripes, and a white kerchief over the woman's shoulders and tied to the front of her bosom. She wears a brown apron, tied around her waist and hanging in front of the skirt of her dress, brown stockings, and black, low heels with buckles. A large straw hat with thin, black border and a black ribbon forming decorative ruffles covers her head. She holds a wooden bucket with white flowers (?) on one arm, and a small, wooden stall on the other. Behind her are green mountains with trees and a small, white house with red ceilings. The right part of the drawing is framed by a semi-abstract scrolling garland of small leaves, executed with shades of green.
