Hand-colored engraving with design for the costume of a Merveilleuse, part of the book "Incroyables et Merveilleuses," with 33 costume plates designed by Horace Vernet and engraved by Georges Jacques Gatine, published ca. 1815 in Paris. The costume in this plate consists of a long, light blue hooded Pelisse (fur-trimmed coat) with ermin fur, worn over an empire-cut, calf-length, white ball gown with soft pink stripes and a scallop-edged lace underskirt. The hair is worn up, decorated with a golden tiara with red stones, and a matching red necklace hangs around the neck; a small, golden fan is held on one hand. A bundle of green leaves and pink roses adorns the hood of the pelisse, another the shoulder, and another the lower part of the skirt. White gloves, hose, and flat, lace-up shoes complete the outfit.
