Mounted on a white horse, General George Washington hands a small spyglass to an officer, possibly the Marquis de Lafayette or Baron von Steuben, attended by an infantryman who holds a rifle fixed with a bayonet. Behind and above, an American flag flies from the top of an embankment defended by cannon, with another gun and shot described at lower right.
