(New York, May 16, 2022)—The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Leonard A. Lauder Research Center for Modern Art, a leading research organization dedicated exclusively to the study of modernism, announced its 2022–2023 Fellowships.
• Sabrina Carletti (Ph.D., Princeton University) has been selected for a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at the Research Center to turn her dissertation into her first book, an interdisciplinary study of Argentinian avant-garde artist Xul Solar, offering new perspectives on the modernization of Argentinian society.
• Stephanie Huber (PhD, the City University of New York, Graduate Center) has been selected for a one-year postdoctoral fellowship to transform her dissertation, “Cultural Predicaments: Neorealism in The Netherlands, 1927–1945,” into a book interpreting Neorealism through film aesthetics and the Dutch Old Masters.
• Özge Karagöz (Ph.D. Candidate, Northwestern University) has been selected for a two-year predoctoral fellowship to work on her dissertation, “Refiguring Art Across Revolutions: Turkish and Soviet Artists in Alliance, 1933–1938.” She will expose histories repressed during the Cold War era and explore how French modernism functioned in artistic debate.

This distinguished group of individuals, which marks our eighth cycle of fellowships, will deepen this work, further demonstrating the Research Center’s commitment to intellectual collaboration.”

Each year, the Research Center awards Leonard A. Lauder Fellowships for pre- and post-doctoral candidates; including the cohort announced today, so far twenty fellows have benefited from Center support. Recent awards have supported the work of scholars focused on Art Brut, Czech modernism, Dada, Brazilian modern art, interwar European Abstraction, Russian Constructivism, and Surrealism, in addition to the agents, dealers, and reception of Cubism. The institution also supports the invited residencies of senior scholars of modern art, who pursue their own studies while participating in the activities of the Research Center.
