Cardinal Scipione Borghese, whose uncle Camillo Borghese reigned as Pope Paul V from 1605 to 1621, was an ambitious patron of the arts. He assembled an impressive collection of ancient statuary at his suburban villa (now the Galleria Borghese in Rome) and in the 1620s gave the sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini some of his first major commissions. This portrait by Giuliano Finelli nicely represents the several textures of the cardinal's resplendent costume, including a stiff collar, a heavy cloak fastened with buttons, and a delicate edge of lace beneath it.
