This painting of about 1890 is a significant example of Degas' later attempts to imitate in oil the effects he had achieved in his pastels of the 1880s. By mixing his colors with white to make them opaque and applying his hues thickly and in layers, he approximated the pastel technique. Other artists, including Monet and Pissarro, were concurrently experimenting with similar methods in order to create rich textural effects.
