In the fall of 1867, Gérôme traveled extensively in Egypt and the Near East. Since the Mosque of cAmr, depicted in the present painting, is described in detail in the journal of Paul Lenoir, Gérôme's traveling companion, it is likely that the painting was done from sketches made on that journey. The mosque dates from the seventh century and is still standing in the eastern part of old Cairo.
