Portrait Medallion: Clara Rosenberger, mid-16th century
South German
Honestone; Diam. 1 5/8 in. (4.1 cm)
Gift of J. Pierpont Morgan, 1917 (17.190.468)

Clara Rosenberger was born in Augsburg and married a master of the Nuremberg Mint who died in 1536. The legend on the medallion states that she is represented at the age of fifty-one. Her clear profile reflects the sharp vision of the artist to capture the determination and dignity of the mature sitter. Medallions in stone, wax, or wood (Carchesius, 17.190.487) were probably made as models for a medal.
