Portrait of a Noblewoman
British Painter, late 16th century
Oil on wood; 44 1/2 x 34 3/4 in. (113 x 88.3 cm)
Gift of J. Pierpont Morgan, 1911 (11.149.1)

The elevated social status of this Elizabethan sitter is suggested by her elaborate dress and jewels. Reflecting the influence of paintings by Nicholas Hilliard (1547–1619), this portrait and another of the same sitter in the Royal Collection at Hampton Court may be dated about 1600.
