Six smaller blue dishes of this type were found in the crypt of the Famen Temple in China, which was sealed in 874, providing a date ante quem for our plate. This plate, one of the few examples of its kind, was found at the site of Nishapur in eastern Iran in 1939. It is, therefore, important evidence of the active glass trade from west to east during the early Islamic period.
