Alfred Dedreux (1810–1860) as a Child, 1818
Jean-Louis-André-Théodore Gericault (French, 1791–1824)
Oil on canvas; 18 x 15 in. (45.7 x 38.1 cm)
The Alfred N. Punnett Endowment Fund, 1941 (41.17)

The pose used in this picture of 1818 was repeated in a larger, slightly later portrait of Dedreux and his sister Elizabeth (private collection, France). Alfred Dedreux became well known as a painter of racing and hunting scenes. He was the son of the architect Pierre-Anne Dedreux (1788–1849) and the nephew of Pierre-Joseph Dedreux-Dorcy (1789–1874), both friends of Gericault. The painting was once owned by the painter Eugène Delacroix.
