Evening cape

Design House House of Vionnet French
Designer Madeleine Vionnet French

Not on view
Madeleine Vionnet was a consummate technician. Draping her fabrics on a ¾ mannequin, she produced garments that were the epitome of precise construction. She contributed to the development of the bias cut, combining it with geometric piecing and stitching that was both decorative and functional to create nearly liquid, form-fitting shapes. The intricate but subtle construction of the cape offers a refined example of Vionnet's work. The shoulder shaping and careful piecing result in a dramatic but controlled garment.
