Mourning hat

Designer Knox American
ca. 1895
Not on view
Though entrenched in a mourning period, women of quality remained stylishly adorned. This beautiful example by one of the premiere American hatters of the 19th century is a highly dramatic hat. The forward-perching silhouette along with the extreme popularity of feathers and birds at this time make this hat an excellent example of the 1890s style.
