Evening hat

ca. 1905
Not on view
Evincing the continuous pendular swings of fashion, the mobcap shape of this hat is comical to modern sensibilities, but was a stylish form in the early 20th century. The exaggerated size is an important feature of the period, as is the attention to varied and appealing decoration, seen in the individualistic flowers of velvet, satin, and tulle, the horsehair braid embroidered with straw twine, and the attractive shirred lining.
