The dramatic silhouette of this evening coat combines references to 1830s sleeve styling and that of the 17th-century cavalier to great effect. The garment belonged to Barbara Cushing Mortimer "Babe" Paley, an American socialite known for her great sense of style.

The donor, Barbara Luntey, was secretary to Babe Paley.
