Most likely, this shirt is part of the boy's ensemble, 2009.300.625a–c, which mirrors the fashion for plaid which was prevalent at that time, made popular by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. A properly dressed boy would have worn an outfit such as this. Appropriate for the period, knickers accompanied boy's ensembles with skirts as an alternative to the girl's pantalettes.
