An enlarged copy of fourth-century Roman gold-leaf medallions, or fondi d'oro. Gold-glass fondi d'oro with Christian, Judaic, mythological, and contemporary secular subjects were placed in the walls of the catacombs of Rome. They were set in the bases (fondi) of glass beakers and cups that were the property of the buried person.
