The highly detailed and beautifully executed painted scene on this plate depicts the triumphal entry of Alexander into Babylon. The composition is derived from an engraving by Sébastian Leclerc made after a painting by the French artist Charles Le Brun (1619–1690). Le Brun was the most influential artist in France in the late 17th century and is often credited with creating the French Baroque style.
