Boats at Low Tide, Boulogne
On loan to The Met
This work of art is currently on loan to the museum. To fill the featureless white skies over landscapes, some early photographers painted fluffy clouds directly onto their negatives, as Baldus did in this view of boats in the French port of Boulogne. The artificial cloudscape blends seamlessly with the soft-edged harbor scene, resulting in a hybrid visual creation that borrows from the picturesque tradition of painted seascapes.
