The cover of this watchcase is engraved with a view of Saint Peter’s Square in Rome. At the time, it was popular for travelers to visit Italy, particularly Rome, as part of an extended trip known as the Grand Tour. While a wealthy aristocrat might come home with classical antiquities, a more modest traveler might purchase this watch as a smaller-scale souvenir of his travels.
