Spring without head and arms

Aristide Maillol French

Not on view

This sculpture is related to Maillol's figure of Spring, one of a group called the Seasons (Spring, Summer, Flora and Pomona), commissioned by the Russian collector Ivan Morosoff in 1909. These four figures were ordered to be placed in the four corners of the White Salon in his villa in Moscow. The Metropolitan Museum's plaster seems to have been cast from an original plaster model for Spring by the sculptor for an exhibition at the Albright Art Gallery in Buffalo in 1925.
