Bishop Saint

Attributed to Pierre Legros II Italian, born France

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 550

This fired clay (terracotta) model may have been made in preparation for a monumental marble statue that stands along with many others atop the Colonnade around the entrance of Saint Peters, Rome -- the seat of the papacy and center of the Catholic Church. The figure is vested in pomp, wearing the pointed mitre and ecclesiastical robes that symbolize his office as a bishop.
