The king wears a cavalry officer's cuirass beneath his military cloak, signifying his role during the War of the Austrian Succession (1740–48). George II personally led the cavalry charge of British, Hanoverian, and Austrian troops to their victory over a superior French force at the Battle of Dettingen, 1743.
